It's finally here! We've practiced hard and now the time has come for us to take the actually NWEA. How can you help? Make sure that your child goes to sleep each night for 10 hours, not just the night before the test. In addition, make sure that your child has a light, healthy breakfast (avoid greasy foods that may cause them to be sluggish). The websites below can be used for practice since they mirror the format and content of the test that your child will take. Letter SoundsTips for Reviewing Letter Sounds @ Home
1) Make a grocery list by stretching out the sounds in words "Rubber Band Style," in slow motion. Repeat this exercise as many times as need to idenitfy beginning (novice skill), middle (advanced skill), and ending sounds (intermediate skill). Practice writing these words down in the form of a numbered list. 2) Say the name of family members, identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in their name, and the letters that make those sounds. 3) Do "The Robot," segmentig the sounds in each word by chopping them up to hear each sound independently. Point to items around the house and say each sound. For example, bed is /b/-/e/-/d/ closet is /c/-/l/-/o/-/s/-/e/-/t/, and purse is /p/-/er/-/s/. Here are a few ways to practice with your child at home so that he/she knows the letters and sounds out of order:
1) Flash cards 2) I Spy... ("I spy something that begins with the letter ________. It's brown and I put my dinner on top of it." 3) Point to objects outside or around the house and have your child tell you the beginning sound of the object. 4) If your child has mastered the beginning sound, have your child tell you the ending sound. 5) Begin to have your child write down the names of objects (list beginning, middle, and ending sounds) around the house and edit them as he/she becomes a more proficient speller.
